    Elevating The Coaching Profession

The reason we’re here is to engage with coaching as something that’s fluid, evolving, and can change based on the people who use and practice the tool of coaching. We want to elevate the coaching profession as something that is legitimate, serious, and fun. We don’t necessarily have all the answers, but we do want to bring up a lot of questions.
Reach out to us and to each other and start having some conversations about who we are as coaches, how we serve our clients, and being thoughtful about the practice of coaching.
We get to decide what coaching is!
What is the power relationship between coach and client? What is the power relationship between coaches inside a group container? What is the role of capitalism? How does your intersectional identity impact the way you coach and can be coached?

Individual Responsibility Versus the Collective in Coaching

Individual Responsibility Versus the Collective in Coaching

What are the differences between individual responsibility and belonging to a group? Does it necessarily mean that benefit to the individual takes away from the group, or that benefits to the group mean that there’s an implicit negative impact on the individual?
As coaches, we are called to be of service, so we are only successful when we are serving our clients to the best of our ability.  Our values align personally and as a collective when we want to be of service. So the question then - do we need to add consideration to our larger impact into our models?
Is the coaching community considering their impact versus intent?  Rising tides rise all boats.  We all benefit from having a society that values all of our wellbeing and all of our health and all of our pay equity and everything.

    Fact or Story?

    Fact or Story?

One of the foundational tools we have as coaches is the concept of “facts” or “circumstances.” This isn’t the same textbook definition that you may be familiar with, but more of an exercise to separate the fact from the story.  A fact in this context would be something outside of yourself that in a court of law, people would generally agree with.  There’s no value judgement or interpretation. The story is what happens in your mind in response to the circumstance.
Something we can do as coaches is re-introduce facts in order to “upgrade” the “filters” that your brain has applied and therefore change your emotional response. Not to mention that facts are all colored by perceptions, biases, vocabulary, and even sensory input.
In coaching, it’s a delicate balance between allowing clients to have their own perception of reality and working towards changing their story.  It’s most important to empower your clients and not get stuck in the fact versus story conversation.
    Coaches are not fact police.

    Neurodiversity In Coaching

    Neurodiversity In Coaching

Today we’ll tackle the topic of neurodiversity within your coaching practice.  The vocabulary is evolving, but it’s becoming more commonly accepted that people with so-called disorders like ADHD and autism (among others) aren’t disabilities, but instead normal variations in human cognitive design.
    With that in mind,
How can we make our tools universally useful for everyone? Is your neurochemistry a circumstance or a thought? Are your thoughts empowering? Are they serving you?Are you treating your clients differently based on their brain or body?

    Internalized Capitalism With Your Clients

    Internalized Capitalism With Your Clients

Neither of us are economists, but we have definitely seen some similarities among clients with how they relate to money and their creativity.
Some examples of internalized capitalism in your clients (and yourself) might be:
The belief that all progress must be linear, positive, upward. The belief that their worth and value as a human are tied to their productivity at a job.The worth you create at work is relative to how much time you spent and how efficient you were.To have more power or influence, they need to have more money.
One major goal of coaching then is to decouple self-worth from the pursuit of goals, and deconstruct the false binaries.

    The Religion of Positivity

    The Religion of Positivity

Something that we’ve noticed within the entrepreneurial space is the focus on positivity, to the point of perfectionism. Does that really get us anywhere? Does it really serve us to eliminate every negative thought or feeling? Is the morality of “good” and “bad” feelings getting in the way of you getting your work done?
Good thoughts=good feelings=good actions=good results, right? If only it were that simple.  Emotions are a natural part of the human experience, and this formula doesn’t account for any privileges you may or may not have.
Try this exercise: Next time you notice a negative or “bad” thought, stop and identify how that thought and feeling is helping you. Is it protective? Is it shining a light on a fear or maladaptive coping strategy you need to deal with? Then, have some compassion with yourself and decide what you want to do with that information.
